Financial Assistance for Nursing Home or Assisted Living Care

There are many questions and misunderstandings when it comes to being eligible for assistance through the VA for long term care. The VA has a benefit called Aid & Attendance that will pay a portion toward the cost of long-term care. Eligible applicants need to meet the following requirements:

  • Must have served at least one day during a war-time period:
    • Mexican Border Period (May 9, 1916 – April 5, 1917)
    • World War I (April 6, 1917 – November 11, 1918)
    • World War II (December 7, 1941 – December 31, 1946)
    • Korean conflict (June 27, 1950 – January 31, 1955)
    • Vietnam era (February 28, 1961 – May 7, 1975 & August 5, 1964 – May 7, 1975)
    • Gulf War (August 2, 1990 – through a future date to be set by law or Presidential Proclamation)
  • Must have served honorably and 90 days active duty
  • Must have a net worth under $80,000 not including house or vehicles (this is based off Veteran & spouse)
  • Must be currently living or in the process of living in a long-term care facility
